20th Anniversary SUNORA Regatta

To all sailors, but in particular past SUNORA participants! We hope you are interested in joining us this year for the 20th Anniversary of this unique event. SUNORA dates are July 25th to August 1, 2015. This year signals the 20th anniversary of this family oriented, low stress race where we sail once again on the original route to Nipigon and Red Rock, anchoring at some of the most beautiful spots along the way.

It is a race and it is a cruise. Cunning and seamanship are involved. Because of interesting handicap calculations all boats are prize contenders. The “motoring permissible” rule affords participants to arrive approximately at the same time at the eveningʼs mooring. This allows for socializing and social activities.

The Sunora is a good opportunity to get to know the waters, as seasoned sailors and novices come together, trade information and help each other out. We also test each otherʼs mettle in dinghy and kayak races, fishing derbies and the Superior Coffee Challenge. In addition thereʼs the Pot Luck BBQ on the dock in Nipigon, the Red Rock Invitational Sailing Race on Wednesday, a sumptuous dinner at the Quebec Lodge in Red Rock, a visit and tour of the renovated Porphyry Point Lighthouse and the award ceremony at Tee Harbour. Gold fringed burgees for the winners!

Different this year is the mass start on Saturday, July 25th, together with the participants of the INTERNATIONAL (race to Houghton). Both SUNORA and INTERNATIONAL participants will have a chance to meet and greet on Friday evening, July 24th, to celebrate the 70th TBYC and the 20th SUNORA Anniversary at the Breakwater Taphouse located on the 2nd floor of the CN Station at the Thunder Bay Marina.

Proposed Route: Saturday night - Tee Harbour; Sunday - Loon Harbour; Monday - Moss Island; Tuesday - Nipigon marina, Wednesday - layover & move to Red Rock marina, Thursday - Otter Cove, Friday - Walker, Saturday - Tee Harbour.

The registration fee is $200 per boat for T.B.Y.C. members and $225 for non-members (includes a T.B.Y.C. social membership). Cost includes: docking, pump out, 2 dinner tickets (additional tickets available) and 1 commemorative item. Jon Block is the Sunora on-land commodore and can be reached at 475-5612, e-mail <jblock@tbaytel.net>. Race Kit pickup night is Wed July 22nd, 7-9PM at Marina Boatersʼ building (by gas dock).
